An oval is cut to proportions that control where light exits the stone, and getting those proportions wrong produces a dark band across the middle known as a bowtie. An ideal cut oval keeps that band out of the face, so light comes back evenly from end to end. On a stud, where the stone is seen flat on from the side, that even return is what you notice.
